2014 Valentine’s Day Messages – French Style

Spa, Belgium

Did you know

That the word Spa which is synonymous to mineral springs, healing waters, is the name of a little town in the
south of Belgium which became famous all over the world for its healing hot mineral springs. It was an exclusive town, frequented by kings and aristocrats in the 18th century, taking the waters, for relaxation as well as for healing.

Last Sunday was a miserable day, almost black skies, raining and cold. But we wouldn’t get defeated,
we had to make this day exciting! We decided to go driving south and brave the awful weather.
The Ardennes, which borders Spa, is the foresty part of Belgium. Beautiful in the summer for its lovely green vegetation….
turning orange and golden in the autumn. Leafless in the winter, the trees become a standing symmetry of trunks and branches.

The old town in the winter

One hour from Brussels by car, via the motorway, you suddenly find yourself driving through gentle rolling hills which reminds you of the countryside of England!. Then you reach the old town of Spa, a very relaxing sight, set in a valley surrounded by forests.
One is initially impressed by the architecture – reminiscent of the art deco of France, with its light grey rooftops, similar to Luxembourg. Luxembourg indeed is not very far away.

Sadly, due to lack of funds, this beautiful building is almost left to ruins.
Not a single plant in sight, only big holes in the ceiling
